FAQs about supporting older people

Support for older people

If you’re concerned that call companion is no longer the right service for the older person you make your regular calls to, please contact the Re-engage team at knowledge@reengage.org.uk.

Having a clear understanding of what’s expected of you in your role is extremely important. Please refer to the boundaries guidelines for volunteers in the volunteer handbook for more information on how to address this issue. If an older person is asking for help with things such as shopping or housework, this might mean that they need more support from other service providers.

The regularly updated signposting pages on our website contains information of other service providers and charities.

Boundaries

Volunteers mustn’t accept gifts or money from an older person. Please take a look at our boundaries guidelines.

If an older person would like to make a donation, they can donate on our website or can post a cheque to Re-engage, 7 Bell Yard, London, WC2A 2JR or make a conation over the phone by calling 0800 716543.

All call companion calls are recorded but the calls are never listened to unless there’s a safeguarding concern.

Please take a look at the guidance around having difficult conversations and enforcing boundaries.

If you need further support, please contact the Re-engage team at knowledge@reengage.org.uk.

We’re committed to ensuring that Re-engage volunteers and older people aren’t subjected to discriminatory or offensive behaviour and language.

If you’re a tea party, flicks and friends, lunch club or activity group volunteer, please discuss the issue with your group coordinator who’ll support you to decide the best approach.

If you’re a group coordinator or a call companion, please contact the Re-engage team at knowledge@reengage.org.uk.

Please take a look at our equality, diversity and inclusion policy.
