We launched our first activity groups in Wales in March 2021 – this was mid-pandemic so our first foray into online delivery. In-person groups launched a few months later. Two years on, we have supported hundreds of older people who now take part in a range of gentle activities such as chair yoga, tai chi, dance, movement to music, curling, boccia, gentle fitness, Zumba, mediation and walking tennis. Our first activity groups were launched in Wales and over the past two years we’ve expanded these groups to West Yorkshire, Birmingham and Bristol and the South West.
Recently, we asked the older people and volunteers who attend our activity sessions about the benefits that they experience*. We found that people have become more active, experienced improved wellbeing and have built social connections within their communities, reducing the loneliness and isolation so many people over 75 are facing.

The benefits of exercise to physical health are well documented, but regular exercise also supports better mental health and wellbeing. Everyone we asked said the groups give them something to look forward to and nine out of 10 people told us that since joining the groups they feel happier, and their wellbeing has improved too.

Joining the groups gives participants a chance to meet new people they can laugh, smile and connect with. Our research also tells us that participants have built stronger social networks with seven out of 10 telling us they feel more a part of their community as a result.
Almost everyone we asked felt confident that they now have people to call if they want company or to socialise, and, importantly, four out of five people told us that they feel less lonely since joining the groups.

These groups rely on the support of dedicated volunteers, who also enjoy the benefits of meeting new people, building stronger local communities, and helping others.

Our volunteers told us how they are learning more about the challenges facing older people experiencing loneliness and the lack of social opportunities available.
