Supporting a legacy
Opening Doors, the only charity in the UK dedicated solely to supporting older LGBT+ people, closed permanently earlier this month.
We will continue to help the legacy of Opening Doors live on by supporting older lonely or isolated LGBT+ people through our rainbow call companions service.
Opening Doors was proud to provide support, training and research specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, non-binary or gender fluid people (LGBTQ+) aged over 50. Its legacy is one of pride, awareness and a foundational platform for future advocacy. The work of the Opening Doors team not only highlighted the unique challenges older LGBTQ+ individuals face but also fostered a community of support and recognition.
CEO of Opening Doors, Bridget Symonds, said: “Our services, research, training and Pride in Care Quality Mark came to fruition due to many years of hard work, commitment, passion and learning from our membership. We are immensely pleased that through Re-engage the legacy of Opening Doors will not be lost.”
CEO of Re-engage, Jenny Willott, said: “Our thoughts are with everyone at Opening Doors following the sad news of its closure. The dedication, diligence, compassion and commitment of all involved made sure that older LGBTQ+ people were listened to, heard, and supported. The whole Re-engage team will work tirelessly to ensure the legacy of Opening Doors lives on.”
