When Rosilyn Bullock was in her 20s, she was a nanny for one of Europe’s most glamorous celebrity couples.
And one of the children she cared for – then nine-year-old Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu - is now a star of Netflix smash-hit series, ‘Emily in Paris’.
Rosilyn, 76, spent six months looking after Philippine and six-year-old brother, Terence, who were the children of French mega-film star, Philippe Leroy-Beaulieu and his wife, Vogue model, Francoise Laurent.
It was the ‘Swinging Sixties’ and Rosilyn was travelling around Italy when she placed an advert in an English-speaking newspaper. One of the replies came from Philippe and Francoise who spent much of their time in Rome and Sardinia.
“It was a fabulous time,” said Rosilyn, who lives in Hounslow, west London. “They really were the glamour couple of the time. Everywhere we went there were countesses and famous people. And if there was a birthday, it wouldn’t be a simple celebration, they would hire a whole restaurant.
“Their homes were beautiful. One even had a domed ceiling like the Vatican. Another had a cave-like entrance, and the furnishings were simple but stylish.
“Philippe was constantly away filming, so I was essentially with Francoise and the children. Philippine was lovely, we always thought she would be an actress because she would constantly dance on a raised floor in the lounge.
“They looked after me well – I had my own suite – and lots of the time I would take the children to the beach when we were in Sardinia.”
Philippe was 93 when he died in June 2024. During his lifetime he made over 150 films and starred in many TV series, mostly in Italy, including the lead role in ‘The Life of Leonardo do Vinci’.
Philippine has also hit the big time, picking up major parts in the popular French comedy/drama ‘Call My Agent’, as well as ‘Emily in Paris,’ starring Lily Collins, about an American girl living in the city.
Rosilyn, who left her home in Derbyshire to go travelling in the 1960s, added: “I’ve tried to keep track of the family, but I never realised Philippine was a big star now. That’s quite amazing to think I used to babysit her all those years ago.”
As well as working as a nanny, Rosilyn had spells in hotels, restaurants and at a ski resort. She also trained as a chef but finally ended up as medical secretary for the NHS. “That was the best job ever,” she said. “I had an exciting adventure while travelling but I still loved that job most.”
