At the heart of the work of Re-engage is our huge network of volunteer-led groups which encourage two critical aspects of the fight against loneliness and isolation:
- Peer groups of older people meeting up on a regular basis to form new friendships
- Generations mixing, enjoying each other’s company and learning from one another
If you would like to be part of setting up a new Re-engage tea party group in one of our key places, then we’d love to hear from you. We will support you along the journey from the very beginning, providing you with the information and help you’ll need to get up and running, and then supporting you and the other volunteers in your group along the way. The tea parties, which are free to attend, generally take place on a Sunday and are enjoyed by thousands of older people, who might otherwise never leave their homes, or see another person.
“The people who make them happen are very special. Without these volunteers they simply wouldn’t exist. They open up their homes to us. Many of them have children and jobs but still give up their time, which is just wonderful – so public-spirited.” Tea party guest, Pat, 90.
Tea parties usually take place in the homes of volunteer hosts with our older guests being driven there by volunteer drivers. The volunteer group coordinator is an administrative role and a vital part of Re-engage.
Meryl Davies, Re-engage CEO
“Our tea parties are the perfect remedy for those feeling isolated, probably even more so since the pandemic gripped the country, and we want to provide a service that will bring some happiness to their lives. Without coordinators we can’t do that.”

Volunteers' Week 2022 - meet Maya
As part of Volunteers' Week 2022 we caught up with one of our younger volunteers, Maya, who we got to know very well when she volunteered with our impact and engagement team. She enjoyed that experience so much that she is about to become a volunteer call companion.
