Throughout Volunteers' Week, we’re catching up with some of our volunteers to hear about their experiences of volunteering for Re-engage and what makes them tick.

In normal times, when our tea parties are running, Jane is one of our volunteer drivers.

Why did you decide to become a Re-engage volunteer?

I wanted to do something with older people in the community as I enjoy their company. I don’t like to think of anyone being lonely, so Re-engage was a good fit for me. To take people out for the afternoon once a month seems such a small thing to do, yet it can have such a big impact on our guests.

What does your role involve?

In normal times, I'm a volunteer driver, so every month I pick up two or three guests and take them to a local tea party at a volunteer host’s house. We have the added bonus of staying for a delicious tea party before driving the guests home again.

What's the best thing about being a volunteer for Re-engage?

I love the way the tea parties are organised so that a group stays together, with the same guests and drivers meeting up every month. It means that we all get to know each other. I’m part of a lovely group and I feel like I have made lots of new friends.

What makes you get out of bed every morning?

My alarm clock - and it’s usually too early for my liking!

Do you have a favourite saying or quote that you live by?

"Kindness doesn’t cost you anything."

What would you say to anyone who was thinking about becoming a volunteer?

Without hesitation I would say, just do it! I'm so pleased to be part of Re-engage and I love to meet up with our older guests every month. The joy it brings to people who live on their own, and don’t get out much, is a wonderful reward for a small effort.
