New activity groups for older people in Birmingham

Last month older people and organisations from across Birmingham attended a launch event to hear more about the free activity groups that Re-engage will be setting up in the area, thanks to a £105,000 grant from Warwickshire Freemasons.

80-year-old Audrey was referred to the chair yoga activity group in Heptonstall, West Yorkshire, by her daughter Sue.  Audrey had not been very active during Covid and Sue wanted to find a gentle physical activity for her that would also give her the opportunity to make friends and socialise.

A life lived

Great grandmother Gladys was born in Islington, north London, during the First World War - the eldest of eleven children. She and her youngest sister, Christine, are the only survivors. On Christmas Day last year, she celebrated her 106th birthday and marked the occasion with a little burst of Abba.

Tania's story

Ukrainian refugee Tania was recently a special guest at a tea party group in Edinburgh. Separated from her own family in Ukraine, Tania was able to put herself in the shoes of the older guests at the tea party who experience loneliness and isolation every day.

Meet call companions Patricia and Charles

Patricia, who is 86, was matched with volunteer call companion Charles six months ago.  She has suffered ill health since contracting tuberculosis at fourteen. But that has not prevented her from campaigning all her life.

This year there were a total of 901 events registered, all of them accessible to older people, ranging from Christmas lunches to Salvation Army band performances and craft classes.
